La casa fue construida hacia fines del 1700 y tuvo varios usos a lo largo de la historia: funcionó como correo y formó parte de la primera Capitanía de Puertos, el organismo que vigilaba el puerto y las costas de la ciudad. Con la epidemia de la fiebre amarilla pasó a ser, como muchas otras casas del barrio, un conventillo para inmigrantes.
El edificio está construido en ladrillo, barro y cal, los materiales típicos de las casas de la época, y cuenta en su interior con un mirador que se eleva 8 metros por sobre la altura de la Avenida Paseo Colón, el lugar a donde llegaba originalmente la costa del Río de la Plata.
En 1967 el pintor argentino Juan Carlos Castagnino adquirió el edificio y lo restauró para usarlo como atelier.
Castagnino fue uno de los artistas plásticos más importantes del país. Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentra la serie de ilustraciones que en 1962 pusieron cara a Martín Fierro, el personaje más representativo del género gauchesco argentino, realizadas para la editorial EUDEBA, la Editorial Universitaria de Buenos Aires.
Además, colaboró, junto a Antonio Berni, en la realización del mural “Ejercicio Plástico” que el pintor mexicano Siqueiros realizó para Natalio Botana y hoy es exhibido en el Museo de la Casa Rosada.
This house was built towards the end of the 1700s and had several purposes throughout history: it worked as a post office and was part of the first Capitanía de Puertos, the organism that watched over the port and coasts of the city. During the yellow fever epidemic it became, like many other houses in the neighborhood, a tenement for immigrants.
The building is made of brick, mud and lime, the typical materials of the houses of the time, and has a viewpoint that rises 8 meters above the height of Paseo Colón Avenue, the place originally reached by the coast of the Río de la Plata.
In 1967 the Argentine painter Juan Carlos Castagnino bought the building and restored it for use as an atelier.
Castagnino was one of the most important plastic artists in the country. Among his most outstanding works is the series of illustrations that in 1962 portrayed Martin Fierro, the most representative character of the Argentine gaucho genre, made for the EUDEBA publishing house, the Editorial Universitaria de Buenos Aires.
He also collaborated, together with Antonio Berni, in the creation of the mural "Ejercicio Plástico" painted by the Mexican painter Siqueiros for Natalio Botana, which is now exhibited at the Casa Rosada Museum.
