Trees are vital for mitigating climate change. Not only do they reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases, but they also act as a refuge for many species of birds, prevent erosion caused by wind and water, and help combat high temperatures.
For all these reasons, in order to continue deepening our actions for the climate, we have set out to surpass our current record of 430,000 trees planted, and to reach 100,000 new trees in the City. Therefore, we are working on urban afforestation, accompanied, in many cases, by neighbors, civil society organizations, students and teachers. In 2020 we planted 1130 trees, and gathered 1112 neighbors who participated in citizen participation programs for the care of trees in the city. With the aim of restoring the landscape and also attracting native fauna, 5,300 specimens were planted in our Ecoparque. More than 2,100 of them were produced through seeds produced in nurseries of the City.
In order to continue with the fundamental tasks of conservation and the development of our trees, we also have an intense maintenance plan and a compensation system for those trees that must be removed, in this manner we can continue guaranteeing their safety, health and sustainability.
At the same time, we promote the production of native species in the City through three nurseries where we produce shrubs, herbaceous and ornamental plants that will later be distributed and planted. The nursery of the Environmental Information and Training Center (CIFA) has a seed bank with genetic material to produce the necessary specimens for biodiversity conservation, strengthening and restoration of ecosystems. In addition, revegetation processes with native species are carried out in various green spaces of the City. From January to September 2021 in the Interactive Ecopark of Buenos Aires, the Botanical Garden, the Ecological Reserve of Costanera Sur, the Parque Sarmiento reservoirs and the Ecological Reserve of Lago Lugano a huge revegetation was carried out, in which between 500 and 1400 new species were planted in each of these locations.
Moreover, we also have an intense maintenance plan and a compensation system for those trees that must be removed to continue with the fundamental tasks of conservation and improvement of the development of our trees.
Between 2021 and 2022, we have planted an estimated amount of 25,000 specimens of native species in different neighborhoods. In addition, during 2021 we have also started The Forestation Plan, which aims to add 15,480 new trees to the more than 430 thousand existing trees in the green spaces and sidewalks of the city.
