La transformación urbana es un elemento fundamental para poder hacerle frente a los desafíos que produce el Urban transformation is a key element in meeting the challenges posed by climate change. In this sense, it is necessary to rethink the shape of cities in order to reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainable mobility.

In this new urban scheme, pedestrian areas are key spaces to move towards a sustainable and resilient city. For this reason, in recent years we have incorporated six pedestrian priority areas: Tribunales, Retiro, Once and Microcentro, the old quarters and lastly, Corrientes Avenue, a pedestrian area created to boost nightlife and cultural activities in the city. This urban transformation, aimed at discouraging the use of vehicles, is intended to reduce air and noise pollution levels. In addition, its implementation allows us to create a city in which people take no more than 15 minutes to travel, thus reducing the use of polluting vehicles and improving people's quality of life.

During 2020, temporary pedestrian streets were created in Retiro, San Telmo, San Nicolás, Recoleta, Almagro, Balvanera, La Boca, Boedo, Parque Chacabuco, Villa Riachuelo, Liniers, Villa Luro, Floresta, Villa Devoto, Villa Urquiza, Belgrano, Palermo and Chacarita, in addition to the six pedestrian areas that already existed by 2019.

The layout of these new pedestrian streets ensures that there is at least one per municipal urban division; all of them are completely closed to vehicular traffic on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. This type of initiative not only reduces air pollution, but also transforms public spaces into places designed by and for people.
