The Adaptation to Extreme Weather Events Program aims to raise awareness of climate change among senior citizens. This program provides them with tools to reduce the risk of climate change impact and increase their response capacity. It began in the summer of 2017 and has achieved the direct participation of the citizens through more than 170 face-to-face workshops, in which they were trained on climate change and provided tools for heat wave prevention. By June 2022, the program has reached 76% of all Recreational Centers distributed in the city and 42% of Retirement Centers.

In the "Mayores Promotores" and "La Tercera en la Calle" programs, many older adults and workshop participants are trained as awareness-raising agents. They then take the message to the different Day Care Centers and squares of the City. In addition, we trained agents from different areas of the Government, who work with vulnerable populations, so that they can also raise awareness about climate change and prevent its effects on health.

We also conducted mass communication campaigns sending messages, making phone calls and sending emails when there is a heat wave alert in order to inform and give advice on how to act to avoid negative impacts on health.
