El Moderno es el museo de la ciudad que exhibe obras de arte moderno argentino e internacional y de artistas contemporáneos.
El edificio es del año 1918 y antiguamente fue depósito de la fábrica de cigarrillos Nobleza Piccardo. Su fachada ladrillera tiene influencias neorenancentistas del norte de Italia y se asemeja a los antiguos galpones del área portuaria. Se destaca en ella la gran puerta de entrada construida en madera y reforzada con chapas de hierro y remaches rústicos.
Creado en 1956 por el crítico de arte Rafael Squirru, durante sus primeros cuatro años fue un museo nómade, razón por la cual la prensa lo apodaba el “Museo fantasma”. Recién en 1963 tuvo su primera sede en el Teatro Municipal General San Martín y en 1986 se trasladó a este edificio, que fue reacondicionado y ampliado en sucesivas etapas hasta verse como está hoy.
Su colección reúne más de 7000 obras de artistas contemporáneos nacionales y extranjeros. Abarca fundamentalmente la producción de arte argentino desde la década de 1920 hasta la actualidad. Entre las donaciones más importantes que el Museo recibió, figuran las colecciones completas de Fotografía Argentina, de Diseño Industrial y Diseño Gráfico Argentino y obras de las últimas tendencias artísticas de las dos últimas décadas.

The building dates from 1918 and was formerly the warehouse of the Nobleza Piccardo cigarette factory. Its brick facade has neo-Renaissance influences from northern Italy and resembles the old sheds of the port area. It features a large wooden entrance door reinforced with iron sheets and rustic rivets.
Created in 1956 by art critic Rafael Squirru, during its first four years it was a nomadic museum. Did you know that for this reason the press nicknamed it the "Ghost Museum"? It was not until 1963 that it had its first headquarters in the General San Martín Municipal Theater and in 1986 it moved to this building, which was refurbished and enlarged in successive stages until its present appearance.
Its collection gathers more than 7000 works of national and foreign contemporary artists. It mainly covers the production of Argentine art from the 1920s to the present. Among the most important donations received by the Museum are the complete collections of Argentine Photography, Industrial Design and Argentine Graphic Design and works of the latest artistic trends of the last two decades.
