Consuming organic products not only implies an improvement in people's eating habits, but it also benefits ecosystems and the environment since the vegetable gardens in which these foods are grown absorb carbon dioxide, thus cleaning the air and reducing pollution.

The City encourages the generation and multiplication of organic vegetable gardens throughout the territory. In 2018, as part of the socio-urban integration process of the Rodrigo Bueno neighborhood, we supported a group of women with the community garden project "La Vivera Orgánica". This idea was born from a group of 15 women from the neighborhood who set themselves the goal of rescuing the knowledge and cultural practices of their original lands. At the beginning of 2020, they obtained the first harvest of 100% organic products. Today it is a self-managed work space, where they grow organic food and plants that they commercialize and thus obtain a sustainable income.

At the same time, we developed multiple awareness activities to promote a healthier life in the City through different proposals such as “health stations” and markets. We also added special markets to the more than 39 neighborhood outdoor markets, which operate in 179 locations in the 15 municipal urban divisions. These special markets include the “Organic Market”, where only certified organic products are sold directly from the producer to the consumer; the “Sabe la Tierra Market”, where organic, natural and agroecological production is articulated with fair trade and responsible consumption; “BA Market”, an itinerant market dedicated to the production of healthy food for the whole family; the “Vegan Market”, which provides citizens with the possibility of getting varied quality and affordable foods from the vegetable world, and the “Gluten-Free Market” which offers products suitable for people with celiac disease.

Just as we did in the Rodrigo Bueno neighborhood, we intend to continue promoting the expansion of vegetable gardens in the City in order to increase the production and distribution of organic and healthy food. During 2021 we conducted 15 workshops on vegetable gardens for small spaces, 3 workshops on hydroponic crops and 6 workshops on biological pest control. 539 people attended the first workshop, 122 people participated in the second one and 213 people in the third one.

We intend to continue strengthening this type of actions, which imply providing Buenos Aires citizens with the necessary tools to be able to generate healthier consumption habits that are beneficial for the planet. At the same time, we also plan to carry out:

  • The layout of vegetable garden projects in other vulnerable neighborhoods.

  • A program of Urban Agriculture, vegetable gardens and hydroponic crops in the Environmental Information and Training Center ( CIFA).

  • The creation of vegetable gardens and nurseries in public school buildings.

  • The expansion of organic and vegan outdoor markets.
